Deployment in Campaigner

In most campaigns you play, you'll have the ability to deploy your forces to the map. To begin deploying, the "Deploy" button must be showing in green. If it is red, click it once to activate it. When its activated (green), left-clicking on the map will attempt to deploy a Battlegroup (if within an operational Deployment Zone). To turn deployment off, click it once to turn it green.

When the "Deploy" button is green, a small window in the upper corner of the map displays the current available point value for your faction. The Faction points are shared between all players on a Faction, so you may need to plan ahead on how many points each player should be allowed to use. The Faction point value available is the first constraint to deploying a Battlegroup. Your Faction must have enough deployment points remaining to cover the cost of the Battlegroup you deploy.

The second constraint is the Deployment Zone you select to deploy into. Deployment Zones have two attributes that define how many points can be deployed:

Additional information on Deployment Zones:

In the above images, the per turn value for sample "A" is 345 per turn, with a total of 345 point that can be deployed using that zone. Sample "B" can deploy only 75 points per turn, to a maximum of 300 points in total. Thus, to fully realize Deployment Zone "B", a player would have to spend four turns deploying into it. This is very useful for representing reinforcements arriving from outside the campaign area.

After clicking in an available Deployment Zone, a new window opens. This is where you build the Battlegroup for deployment. In some campaigns, the moderator may allow only pre-created Battlegroups to be deployed. In this case, only the add/remove new group and OOB deploy buttons will be available.

  1. Main Tools: Here you can add, remove groups as well as add/remove units and add Order of Battle units.
  2. Battlegroup View: As you build the Battlegroup, sub-groups and units will be displayed here.
  3. Battlegroup Point Cap: In some games, there is a maximum point value each group can be, if there is one, it will be shown here.
  4. Selected Group Values: After clicking a Battlegroup in the Battlegroup View, the selected group's values will be shown.
  5. Battlegroup Icon: This represents the Battlegroup on the map, you can click it to change it.
  6. Main Battlegroup Values: The values of the main Battlegroup are shown here.
  7. Point Values: The point values for the Deployment Zone and Faction are listed here.

Building a Battlegroup

In campaigns where you can create your own Battlegroups with the units of your choosing, you'll have access to all of the units and the freedom to create the Battlegroup as you see fit, or as your group has decided. Using the Add/Remove Unit buttons you can add multiple units to the main Battlegroup, or sub-battlegroups. There are no internal constraints on the creation of Battlegroups within Campaigner. If your chosen game system has explicit rules concerning the organization of forces, you'll have to meet with your group to determine the best methods for creating Battlegroups.

Below, I'll step through the process of creating a main Battlegroup, adding two sub groups with units. The units available are created by the author of the campaign and should reflect the units used in the tabletop game system you're using. Make sure the "Deploy" button is green and left-click inside the boundaries of an existing Deployment Zone owned by your Faction. The "Deploy New Battlegroup" window will then be displayed.

1) Enter a name for the main Battlegroup, I used "32nd Scout"

2) Click "Add BG" , select the new group and name it "Capt Hemmil". With "Capt Hemmil" selected, click on the Battlegroup icon to select a new icon. When you click the Battlegroup icon, a file window opens up in which you can navigate to the image you want to use for this group. I selected an HQ icon for the Captain's Battlegroup.

3) With Capt Hemmil selected in the Battlegroups window, click "Add Unit" . This will open the unit selection window where you can add units to the selected Battlegroup. In the left window, you will see the units you can add to the Battlegroup, and on the right the units that are in the Battlegroup are listed. I've added an HQ and two Fast Attack units by selecting them on the left and pressing the "Add" button in the center of the window. When you've finished selecting the units for your Battlegroup, press the "OK" button on the bottom right of the window.

4) Now that you have added the units, you can expand Capt Hemmil's group and see the units that make up the group.

5) Follow the same procedure to add another sub group to "32nd Scout". You can also change the main BG's icon in the same way as the sub groups by clicking on it, which I've done. When you've finished creating the group, click "Deploy" to get it on the map, or "Cancel" to discard the deployment.

Here's what we end up with in Campaigner, the "32nd Scout" deployed to the field of battle.

Deploying OOB Groups

When the creator of the campaign has selected the option "Allow Only Order of Battle", you will only be able to deploy forces that have been created by the campaign author. There are two choices for getting your OOB groups deployed, you can either deploy an OOB directly to the map, or you can create a Battlegroup and add OOB groups to it. When you press the "Order of Battle" button on the "Deploy New Battlegroup" window, the "Select Order of Battle" window opens. You'll see all of the available OOB groups your Faction has access to.

You can either "Deploy" or "Add" from this window. First, select the OOB group you want to either deploy directly to the map, or add to the main Battlegroup. When you select "Add", the selected OOB group will be added to the main Battlegroup from the previous screen.

If  you select "Deploy", all information from the previous screen will be lost and ONLY the selected OOB group will be deployed. This is important to consider, you don't want to accidentally deploy a single OOB group when you were building a larger group.
